The idea behind MySpace.com is simple; create a private community where people can join, hot music can be downloaded from up-and-coming bands and long-lost friends can be located.
According to Google, MySpace.com that was launched in January 2004 has now shot to the top of the popularity charts on the internet, garnering today over 47.3 million members. Founders Chris DeWolfe and Tom Anderson are still CEO and president but the website according to a recent article in USA Today has exchanged hands being purchased for 580 million dollars by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.
When some of us were younger, we typically hung out in ice cream parlors, skating rinks and local hamburger joints. Today, the youth of America congregates on the Internet and MySpace.com is the hot spot to hang-out and just “chill.”
When you register on MySpace.com you have the option of uploading photos, inviting friends to visit or sign up for your own blog. Your welcome message comes into your private message box immediately, accompanied by a photo of the sender and a warm greeting to take a look around MySpace.com and take full advantage of its features.
Why is MySpace.com so popular?
One of the major attractions on the website is the member list featuring photos of members along with online tracking status. Although the website is slow to load due to heavy traffic, while you wait, you can listen to music or view an interesting profile.
Talking with members and asking them the pros and cons of this website drew some interesting feedback.
From a teenager: “Well, I have been on the website nearing a year now. Maybe 9-11 months. The "idea" behind the website is great. It's a great way to meet new people you may not meet otherwise, and it's a great way to stay in touch with people. I made an account not expecting too much, and I was simply amazed how many people I knew from high school were already members. The sole purpose for MySpace for me is to stay in touch with friends.”
From the same member comes this warning:
Cons though, there's a few that stick out to me; the whole concept of making it a popularity contest, as to who can have the most friends. People you don't even know randomly wanting to add you to their collection is extremely annoying. Some bands do the same thing. They send these mass- produced messages saying something like "Hey, you seem like a cool person. I thought you might want to check out my band. Add us, and tell us if you like our music." Next thing you know, you talk to a friend, and you get "Oh, I got that message too.”
